PlanetRomeo Alternative: What Happened to the Blue Pages?

Before Grindr, before the swipe, before anyone worried about location permissions, gay Germany had a website that seemingly everyone was on. It was nosy, it had a group for almost everything, and it was called PlanetRomeo.

PlanetRomeo (now officially just Romeo) launched in Berlin in 2002 as GayRomeo and became the country's unofficial "Blue Pages". It still counts more than 3 million members, but the daily "who's around?" check has moved to apps with a live map. Our pick for a PlanetRomeo alternative in 2026 is HornetX, which puts verified faces, a live map and chat in one place. Let's trace how we got from the Blue Pages to the blue dot.

PlanetRomeo History: From Berlin Hobby Project to Household Name

It all began in October 2002 with a hobby project called GayRomeo, run from Berlin and, at first, only in German. That's why the early crowd was almost entirely German-speaking. Then the plot thickened:

  • 2006: The operation moves to Amsterdam under Planetromeo B.V.
  • 2009: It buys Guys4Men.com, which opens the door to Asia, and launches the PlanetRomeo Foundation for LGBTQI+ grassroots projects.
  • 2011: GayRomeo rebrands as PlanetRomeo.
  • 2021: The name shrinks to plain Romeo, with the new domain announced on 27 July 2021.

Most people never stopped saying PlanetRomeo, so we won't either. The Wikipedia entry on Romeo has the full timeline for the nerds among us.

Why Germany Called It the "Gay Registry Office"

Try explaining this to anyone born after 2000: there was a time when you looked up gay men the way you looked up a plumber. Germans nicknamed PlanetRomeo the schwules Einwohnermeldeamt (the gay registry office) and Die blauen Seiten (the Blue Pages), a wink at the Yellow Pages. Everyone seemed to have a profile, so everyone could be found.

It also arrived at exactly the right moment. As a 2017 portrait in männer* points out, free online chat was a novelty before Facebook and mainstream online dating. Add detailed profiles, club pages for bars and saunas and interest groups for nearly everything, and PlanetRomeo became less a website than a hangout.

Not everyone found the registry joke funny. In 2004 the newspaper taz quipped that "the pink lists are back", a reference to the lists of gay men kept under the Nazis, and a sharp reminder of how much sensitive data one site could hold. Still, for a whole generation PlanetRomeo simply was the scene, online.

Is PlanetRomeo Still Popular in Germany?

Don't write the obituary yet. According to Wikipedia, Romeo has more than 3 million users (2024). Its Android app has passed 10 million downloads, and it's still strongest with the 30+ crowd in German-speaking countries. As an EU company it also falls under the GDPR, which counts for something when a site holds this much personal data.

But the habit changed. The founder has said the original Classic site wasn't built for smartphones, and the jump to mobile was bumpy. Meanwhile a new wave of apps asked a simpler question: who's near me, right now?

  • Grindr: Grindr lines men up in a grid sorted by distance. Its Android app has over 50 million downloads, and an October 2026 check by Herzblatt Journal puts its Google Play rating at 4.0 against 2.6 for Romeo. On the App Store they tie at 4.1.
  • Romeo: Profiles, search and groups are its strengths. Chat is unlimited for free, but search stops at 150 results unless you pay for PLUS, which starts at 9.99 euros per 30 days in the German App Store.
  • Sniffies: The map comes first. It reportedly has around 3 million monthly users, and Match Group put $100 million into it in April 2026, as GeekWire reported. We compare it with other map-based options in our Sniffies alternatives guide.

As for a full "takeover", independent market-share numbers for Germany are scarce, so we won't pretend to have a scoreboard. The momentum, though, clearly runs toward fast, location-based apps. We came at the same shift from another angle in our post on why real conversation beats a bot.

The Best PlanetRomeo Alternative in 2026: Why We're Betting on HornetX

So where should you go if you want something that moves at the speed of your evening plans? Our vote goes to HornetX. It comes from Hornet, which says its chat app has over 100 million users worldwide, and it was built for the way guys meet now. Three things set it apart.

Real faces. Hornet's platform uses face verification, and HornetX's terms require identity and liveness checks. That makes it more likely that the guy you're chatting with is real and looks like his photos.

A live map. According to Hornet, HornetX is a map-based web app for gay men. Open it, see who's around, chat discreetly and plan a meet-up without the detours.

More than a grid. Hornet offers feeds and communities, live streaming through Hornet Live, video chat, video messages, private photo management and screenshot prevention, added in its V9 update in November 2024. It's also built for city scenes, as our guides to gay Berlin and gay Munich show.

Now the question you've been waiting for: where are the hottest guys? Taste is personal and, obviously, we're biased. But with verified faces and a live map, you can run the experiment yourself tonight.

PlanetRomeo or HornetX? Four Questions to Decide

Still torn? Ask yourself:

  • Do I want deep profile search and groups, or a live view of who's nearby?
  • How much do verified faces matter to me?
  • How precise should my location be, and can I control it?
  • What's free, and what does the upgrade cost?

Romeo still suits you if you love detailed profiles and community groups. If you want fast, local and verified, HornetX is the one to try.

PlanetRomeo FAQ

Is PlanetRomeo the same as Romeo?

Yes. GayRomeo became PlanetRomeo in 2011 and Romeo in 2021. Same service, newer names.

Is PlanetRomeo free?

The basic version is free with unlimited chat, but search is limited to 150 results. PLUS lifts that cap and starts at 9.99 euros for 30 days in the German App Store, according to Herzblatt Journal.

Why was PlanetRomeo called the Blue Pages?

It echoed the Yellow Pages: a directory where, in Germany, it seemed every gay man could be looked up.

What is the best PlanetRomeo alternative?

We think it's HornetX, thanks to verified faces, a live map and community features. Grindr and Sniffies are the other big names.
